LAUREL, Del. - Vance Owens is a DJ at Station 7.
"Here we have lots of energy," said Owens. "Everybody knows each other. Everybody is friendly."
But every Thursday, this bar gets transformed into a beer pong hot-spot.
Instead of beer, players use water in their cups. In accordance to bPong.com, players use racks to set up a 10 cup game of beer pong (also known as Beirut and bPong). The cups are regulation-size bPong cups. Teams are allowed two re-racks each game (at six cups and at three cups).
According to Owens, it's unique to the Eastern Shore.
"Beer pong has been a big college sport and we wanted to bring it in a bar environment that wasn't as stressful for drinking purposes."
It's much more than just a game, these players take this seriously. They split their season into two halves. Each week is a step closer to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to win a trip to Las Vegas for the World Series Of Beer Pong Championship (or WSOBP) and a $50,000 grand prize.
Last week, Justin Collins and his partner represented Station 7 at the championship in Las Vegas. They moved onto the first round of eliminations, before losing in overtime.
Collins describes the event as "rowdy as can be, way more than what I expected. [It's a] once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."
Owens says he wants to take the sport beyond Station 7, starting an Eastern Shore bPong League and bring more teams from to next year's WSOBP.
