Crisfield Elks Offers Scholarship To Student Who Pays It Forward

Posted: Updated:

Meet The Money Givers kicked off this week, with dozens of new scholarship opportunities for prospective college students. On this Saturday, we introduce you to a local Elks member, willing to offer some money to a student who is community-minded.

For over 60 years, Crisfield Elks Lodge 1044 has helped send deserving students to college.

"We have fun together but we do contribute to various charities in the district, as well as looking after our students specifically in Somerset county," said long-time member, John MacKenzie.

A little bit really does go a long way. Members and visitors try their luck on those penny machines, and in turn, the Elks use 50 percent of the profit to award scholarships to Somerset County Seniors.

"That money comes from slot machines so it has to go to charity. We want it directed to someone in need and students are obviously a good resource for that," said MacKenzie.

After Superstorm Sandy, the Elks stepped up to help their community with clothing and food donations, which is why they're looking to help a student who, likewise pays it forward. So you must have some community service hours under your belt.

Aside from the usual essay, financial need is a must. But time is running out, so apply now. The deadline for this scholarship is January 30th.
