Just Zoo It! Campaign Winners Announced

Posted: Updated:

MARYLAND - A big surprise for a second grade class at Willards Elementary School.

The Delmarva Zoological Society and Mayor Jim Ireton popped in to reward students who raised the most money during the Just Zoo It! campaign last Fall.

The students each collected coins in cans that were distributed to classrooms before Halloween. The proceeds went to the Salisbury Zoo.

"Students at this age in general are really excited about animals. It's easy to get this group excited. They're an excitable group. We had a couple of the students who really just took it on and they were challenging each other, and they came up with $237.71," 2nd grade teacher Debbie Simpkins said.

While some coins are still being turned in, the unofficial count is more than $22,500.

The class in participating counties that raised the most money will be rewarded with an all-expense paid trip to the Salisbury Zoo with a VIP tour, pizza party, t-shirts and other gifts.

This year's winners include:

Dorchester County: Warwick Elementary School - Ms. Cox (5th grade) $244.39

Wicomico County: Willards Elementary School - Ms. Simpkins (2nd grade) $237.71

Somerset County: To be announced Friday

Private School: Salisbury School - To be announced Friday
