Ex-Virginia Resident Sentenced In Daughter's Death

Posted: Updated:

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - A former Virginia resident convicted in the shaking death of her 11-month-old daughter has been sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Media outlets report Julie M. Calahan was sentenced Tuesday in Virginia Beach Circuit Court for felony child abuse and voluntary manslaughter.

After Calahan's brother-in-law was sentenced to a year for child neglect, police reopened an investigation in 2011 after comments about her involvement in the May 2009 death of Lakeira Calahan were posted on a social website.

A detective testified that Calahan, who had moved to Brinkley, Ark., was interviewed about the comments and eventually confessed.
