Tainted Steroids with Meningitis from the New England Compounding Center Blamed for 656 Cases of Fungal Meningitis and Other Infections, Including 39 Deaths. Wright & Schulte LLC Continues to Investigate Potential Fungal Meningitis Lawsuits on Behalf of Individuals Sickened by Contaminated Steroid Injections.
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) January 06, 2013
In the wake of the multistate tainted steroid fungal meningitis outbreak, Wright & Schulte LLC, a leading harmful drug side effect law firm and Ohio personal injury law firm, supports Gov. Duvall Patrick’s call for more oversight of compounding pharmacies in Massachusetts. The multistate tainted steroid fungal meningitis outbreak has been linked to tainted epidural steroid injections produced by the New England Compounding Center (NECC). According to an article published by The New York Times on January 4th, if passed, the laws proposed by Gov. Patrick will be among the strongest in the country.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), tainted steroid injections produced by Massachusetts-based NECC have been linked to 656 cases of fungal meningitis and other fungal infections in 19 states. The case count includes 39 deaths as a result of fungal meningitis. NECC recalled all of its products and voluntarily surrendered its license to operate on October 6, 2012. Prior to the recall, the potentially tainted steroids were shipped to 76 facilities in 23 states, the CDC said.
According to The New York Times, subsequent investigation of NECC found extensive contamination at its facility, as well as a long history of questionable practices that had drawn warnings from the state and the Food & Drug Administration. The laws proposed by Gov. Patrick would, among other things, establish strict licensing requirements for compounding sterile drugs, and allow the state to fine facilities that violate rules. The new laws would also provide whistleblower protection to people who work for compounding pharmacies, and reorganize the state’s pharmacy board so that it includes fewer members who are a part of the industry, the Times said.
The attorneys of Wright & Schulte LLC applaud Gov. Patrick’s bold proposal, and call on Massachusetts lawmakers to pass these bills quickly. The firm also calls on other states to adopt similar measures so that compounding pharmacies are not simply able to set up shop in states with weaker regulators.
