Maryland Seeking Photos Of King Tides

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland's Department of Natural Resources says the public can help the state prepare for future superstorms by taking photos of higher than normal King Tides expected next week.

King Tides occur several times a year when the Earth, moon and sun align in a way that increases normal high tides. The tides caused minor flooding last month in parts of California. State officials say the impact is not as severe in Maryland. However, photographing areas that flood during the higher than normal tides will help prepare for future superstorms.

King Tides are expected in Maryland from Jan. 9-13. State officials are asking the public to post any photos they take to the Maryland King Tides photo group on the flickr.com website.
