Maryland's New Congressman Takes Office

Posted: Updated:

HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) - Maryland's newest congressman is taking office as lawmakers continue to grapple with tough choices about federal deficit reduction.

The swearing-in Thursday of Democratic Rep. John Delaney ends 20 years of Republican representation in the state's 6th Congressional District.

He defeated 10-term incumbent Roscoe Bartlett in November after Maryland's ruling Democrats redrew the district's boundaries. The redistricting added part of left-leaning Montgomery County to a district encompassing conservative western Maryland.

Delaney campaigned as a moderate. He favors a combination of spending cuts and tax increases to reduce the deficit.

Delaney also has advocated lower corporate taxes along with elimination of certain deductions and loopholes. And he says Medicare should be tweaked to make it more efficient.

Delaney is a commercial banker from Potomac. He sits on the House Financial Services Committee.
