WMDT 47 News -January is Radon Action Month according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Radon is apparently the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers, so the American Lung Association, the CDC, and the Nation Cancer institute are encouraging radon testing throughout the month.
Radon is a naturally-occurring, invisible and odorless radioactive gas. One in 15 American homes contains high levels of radon. MIllions of Americans are unknowingly exposed to the gas, and in fact, according to a recent study by Harvard University, radon is America's leading in-home hazard.
A number of agencies, including the EPA, will focus efforts on radon reduction and mitigation in homes, especially those of low-income families. To learn more about the Federal Radon Action Plan at www.RadonPlan.org and to learn more about national radon action month visit www.RadonMonth.org.
