Somerset County Sandy Victims Eligible for Food Stamps

Posted: Updated:

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) - Some Maryland residents affected by Superstorm Sandy will be eligible to receive food stamps under a federal aid program.

The assistance for residents of Somerset County was announced Sunday by Gov. Martin O'Malley and Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin.

President Barack Obama this month designated the county as a major disaster area eligible for assistance.

The aid is provided under the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food stamps for households hit by natural disasters. Households must live in the disaster area and be affected by the disaster in order to be eligible. The program provides one month of benefits to eligible survivors.

Storm victims can apply from January 7 through 13 at the county Department of Social Services and at the Disaster Recovery Center in Crisfield.
