National Archives Tribute Marks Emancipation Proclamation's 150th

WASHINGTON (AP) - This January 1st marks the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.The landmark document declared all slaves in states or any parts of states still in rebellion against the Union to be "forever free" from that day forward.

This New Year's there will be numerous observations of the anniversary. One of the biggest is planned at the National Archives in Washington, where special viewing hours for the proclamation are scheduled through Tuesday.

A bell will be rung at midnight on New Year's Eve and the proclamation will be read the next morning.
