VSP: Victims Random, Arsonist Unpredictable

Posted: Updated:

MELFA, Va. - Virginia State Police are talking about details in the arsonist case.

"To the people of Accomack County, I think it's clear that we have an arsonist on our midst," said 1st Sgt. J.P. Koushel.

After 40 days and 36 intentionally burned structures, police in Accomack County are boisterously speaking out, hoping to put an end to this string of arsons.

"Evidence indicates that all 36 of these fires have been intentionally and maliciously set," said Sgt. Koushel.

While we don't know the person behind the flames, we do know the crimes started on Nov. 12th. The latest one just last night on Dec. 20th.

Police say there's several details they feel certain about. This arsonist is a local and the mayhem is by far the worst they've ever seen.

"We've never had an arsonist destroy so many structures in such a short period of time.  Ever," said Sgt. Koushel.

Officials say if the arsonist is caught, the person will face upwards of 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine for each structure burnt. Police continue to ask for the public's help, with a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
