UPDATE: Ridgely Woman Charged With Killing Father On His 90th Birthday

Posted: Updated:

RIDGELY, Md. - Now to a dramatic twist in a robbery homicide investigation. Investigators now believe the sole witness of Monday's crime, was in fact the attacker.

It was supposed to be a day of celebration. Arthur Cohee of Ridgely reached a major milestone, his 90th birthday, but it would be his last. 911 dispatchers got a call from Arthur's daughter Janice, saying he was dead.

"They arrived and found the woman who had made the call outside the residence and had went inside and found the deceased sitting in a chair in the kitchen," said Maryland State Police Spokesman, Greg Shipley.

It is believed that Janice tried to stage a robbery. She told police that two men broke into their home on Ridgely Avenue, demanded money and then killed her father in the kitchen while she hid in another bedroom. However, police say that was all a lie.

"They looked at the evidence and conflicting statements and it became clear through the night to investigators, that this woman had in fact committed the crime," said Shipley. @

Police say Arthur had wounds on his head and neck. Neighbors tell WMDT he was shot, but police won't confirm that. Nearby residents say the 58-year-old woman was known as the cat lady, and suffered from mental illness.

"Everybody is kinda shocked that it happened, that she's local, and I think she's been here for years," said Lucille Ball, local resident and business owner.

"You don't go around killing people your supposed to love one another," said another local resident. @

We hear Arthur and Janice lived together and argued often. Police are still trying to figure out what drove her to allegedly kill her own father.

Officers slapped Janice Cohee with a number of charges, including first and second degree murder. The investigation is ongoing.
