Increase In MD Holiday Travel Predicted

Posted: Updated:

TOWSON, Md. (AP) - A new survey projects that 1.9 million Maryland residents are expected to travel 50 miles or more over the holidays.

If that number holds, AAA Mid-Atlantic says it would be the largest number of holiday travelers since the auto club began forecasting statewide holiday travel in 2001.

AAA says 90 percent of travelers are expected to drive. The projected average length for a round trip is 765 miles.

AAA says average gas prices in Maryland are higher than they've ever been heading into the Christmas holiday. However, prices have dropped by more than 50 cents a gallon since peaking at $3.80 on Sept. 13.

The auto club is also projecting an uptick in holiday travel from Washington-area residents.
