SALISBURY, Md. - After years of negotiating, a so called town eye sore, is wrapping up the demolition process. Monday afternoon, the final portion of Linens of the Week building on Church Street was demolished.
The process has been on-going since 2008. The buildings and property was officially donated to the City of Salisbury in early 2011. It has been an on-going project ever since then, with the removal of asbestos, lead, an above ground chemical storage tank, and the excavation of more than 775 tons of soil.
"This project has taken a long time to come to fruition, and has involved a lot of time and effort on the part of many people" said Deborah Stam, Salisbury's Community Development Department Director. "This dilapidated facility has been a blighting influence on the Church Street neighborhood for a long time, but soon the property will be available for redevelopment in a positive manner that will contribute to the community."
At a press conference on Monday Mayor Jim Ireton said he was going to suggest to the city council that the property be donated to Habitat for Humanity.
