SALISBURY, Md. -- To many, the staff at Peninsula Regional Medical Center are real life Santa's. They banded together Monday morning to get presents to families in need. It all started back in October, when agencies came to them with deserving families and a wish list.
"We then match them up with a department in the hospital who can handle taking care of that family for the Christmas Season," Coordinator Amy Bishop tells WMDT.
"So the minute the lists go out you get ' I've got this, I've got that, I'm going to take care of this,' so it's so exciting. It brings back again what Christmas is all about," Robin Massey adds.
The presents were lined up against the wall, waiting to go to the many agencies in Wicomico, Worcester, and Somerset Counties. 77 families will get a very special surprise this Christmas, many of which lost everything during Superstorm Sandy.
Officials tell WMDT that once the storm hit, the list of families needing adoption grew significantly. But, those folks are not looking for I-Pads, and smart phones, just basic necessities.
"They're asking for sheets and towels and bed linens and curtains and food. A lot of families just need food. A lot of the families we've gotten moved into shelters," Bishop says.
Workers will be back at it again Tuesday from 8 until 11am, making sure all those presents get to the agencies who requested them. And for what will be a miracle for many families, these gifts will be delivered on Christmas Day.
