Gun Control Supporters Hold Vigil at White House

Posted: Updated:

WASHINGTON (AP) - Supporters of gun control have gathered at the White House to call for action following the school massacre in Connecticut.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence organized a candlelight vigil Friday evening. WRC-TV reports pastors and people with first and experiences with gun violence took part, and many in the somber crowd carried signs and held up candles. Some chanted "Today IS the day" to take steps to curb gun violence.

Connecticut police say the gunman killed his mother at home before opening fire inside an elementary school where she taught, massacring 26 people, including 20 children. The 20-year-old killer then committed suicide, bringing the death toll to 28.

The coalition said in a news release that it was calling on President Barack Obama to offer more than "thoughts and prayers." Obama called for "meaningful action" to prevent such shootings.
