VA Gov Invokes Tech Slayings, Offers His Prayers

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia's governor is extending his sympathies to Connecticut following a horrific elementary school massacre, saying the state still has "painful memories" from the April 2007 shootings at Virginia Tech.

In a statement, Gov. Bob McDonnell said Friday his thoughts and prayers are with the families affected by the deadly shootings of children and adults in Newtown, Conn. He said the memories of the Tech shootings have never faded in Virginia and the state continues to grieve for the 32 slain by a lone gunman on the Blacksburg campus.

The gunman killed himself at Tech, leaving 33 dead in the worst mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

McDonnell also offered any assistance Virginia can offer to Connecticut.
