Feds Seeking Deal In State Department Bribery Case

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Federal prosecutors in Delaware are seeking to avoid a trial in a case against a former State Department employee charged with accepting bribes.

Prosecutors filed court papers Thursday asking that a preliminary hearing scheduled for next week be postponed while they try to work out a deal with Kenneth Michael Brophy.

Prosecutors and Brophy's attorney also are requesting a protective order to prevent public disclosure of information the defense is seeking from the government, including witness interviews.

Brophy was arrested in October after traveling to Delaware to attend a wedding.

He is accused of taking $30,000 from an Afghan company that he supervised in a prison renovation in Kabul, and which he helped in appealing the termination of other U.S. contracts because of shoddy work in building Afghan police facilities.
