
CENTREVILLE, Md. - A teenager has been arrested after allegedly setting a fire at his high school.
According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office, the fire was started around 8:15 AM in a second floor classroom of Queen Anne's County High School on Ruthsburg Road in Centreville. The fire was reportedly found by a student, who pulled the fire alarm. School staff then responded and put out the fire, before the sprinklers were able to turn on.
Officials say earlier in the morning there was a small fire in a 1st floor bathroom that had also been put out by school staff, .
More than 1200 students and staff had to be evacuated from the high school, before being sent home for the day, because of the blaze. No one was injured. Damages and clean up is estimated at $5,000.
A 16-year-old student has been charged in connection with this fire. He was charged with Arson 1st Degree, Arson 2nd Degree, Malicious Burning 1st Degree, Malicious Burning 2nd Degree, Disruption of School Activities and Malicious Destruction of Property. He is being held by the Department of Juvenile Justice.
