Another Fire Burns Down A Home In Accomack

Posted: Updated:

ACCOMAC, Va. - Another fire was set at an abandoned structure in Accomack County, Virginia.  This is possibly the 28th in an alleged arson ring that started exactly one month before, on November 12th.

Firefighters got the call at 9:11 PM on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 for a fire at an abandoned two story home on Tictown Lane in Accomac, Virginia.

Thousands of gallons of water were used to fight the fire which engulfed the home and some surrounding trees.  The forestry department dug a trench around the home and nearby trees to keep the fire contained as it slowly burned itself out.  Nearly three hours after it started, those firefighters were still out monitoring the flames and said they would be there periodically throughout the night until the flames died down.

As volunteer firefighters respond to the more than two dozen fires, they say it's not only equipment that's getting worn down.

"It's taken a serious toll on us, because we all have jobs and families, and it's taken a definite toll on us.  I mean, I've got people that need to be at work at 6 o'clock in the morning, people were just sitting down to dinner and look at what time it is now and we're still out here," said Jeff Beall, Chief of the Tasley Volunteer Fire Company.

As winter draws nearer and the air gets dryer, the risk of the fires spreading is another concern, which is why firefighters are hoping for some help from Mother Nature.

"That's why we're praying for rain," said Beall, "I'd love to see a nice thunderstorm tonight."

There aren't any suspects in custody, and police are still looking for help.  If you know anything -- contact Virginia State Police at 757-787-5813
