Former Marine Imprisoned In Mexico

Posted: Updated:

FLORIDA - A Florida family is fighting to get their son home safe. "We just try to take one day at a time."

Jon Hammar, a former marine, spent four years fighting overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan. But for the past four months, his mother says he's been chained to a bed in a Mexican prison. She says he was planning a surfing trip to Costa Rica, but got stopped at the Mexican border because he had a shotgun with him. Even though he declared it, he was arrested.

Jon Hammar Sr., the former marine's father, says "it's just a silly...unfortunate, dumb thing to happen and now his life is in jeopardy." His mother, Olivia Hammar, says "We keep telling him what we're doing and that we think it's going to end soon, but you can only say that for so long."

Hammar's next hearing is set for January. If you would like to help bring him home, go to change.org and sign the petition. At last check, it had nearly 1800 signatures.
