2nd MD Resident Died Of Fungal Meningitis In Nov.

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Maryland health officials say the second person to die in the state from an outbreak of fungal meningitis was a person who was known to be infected and was receiving treatment.

Lucy Wilson, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, says the unidentified person died in November. She says the state can't release any further details because the patient's privacy needs to be safeguarded.

Nationwide, there have been 590 cases of fungal meningitis in 19 states. The outbreak is linked to steroid shots for back pain made by a specialty pharmacy in Massachusetts. Thirty-seven people have died.

Maryland officials reported the state's first death in October.
