Maryland Gets Approval To Operate Health Exchange

Posted: Updated:

ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Maryland has received conditional approval by the federal government to operate a state-based health insurance exchange in 2014.

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown made the announcement on Monday.

Maryland is among the first six states to get the approval. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has certified the Maryland Health Connection to operate for the first plan year in 2014.

The state says the certification indicates Maryland will be operationally ready for open enrollment beginning in October 2013. It also indicates the state continues to meet federal requirements.

Maryland residents and small businesses will be able to use the Internet to compare health insurance options and determine eligibility for tax credits and cost-sharing reductions.
