Delawareans Mark Dec. 7 For Two Reasons

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Dec. 7 carries a special meaning for many Americans as the anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in World War II.

But Delawareans have another reason to mark the date, which is known as Delaware Day and coincides with the anniversary of the state's ratification of the U.S. Constitution.

State officials will gather Friday at the Delaware Public Archives to celebrate the 225th anniversary of Delaware's ratification.

Elsewhere, U.S. Sens. Tom Carper and Chris Coons planned to start the day at the Delaware Military Academy for a ceremony honoring the 2,403 American lives lost at Pearl Harbor in 1941.

The lawmakers then plan to visit the Delaware Veterans Home to meet with World War II veterans, including one who survived the attack on the USS Arizona.
