Mystery Shopper Scam From Ocean City

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - Ocean City Police warn of another scam.  A fake company called Global Test Marketing sends a letter in the mail asking you to be a customer service evaluator (mystery shopper).  They give you a bogus check for $988 to deposit into your account.  With that, Global Test Market asks you to go to a big box store like Wal-Mart, Macy's JC Penny, Sears, Best Buy, or K-Mart, shop, and evaluate the store and service.  Lastly, you have to buy a prepaid card for a little over $800.

Ocean City Police Department PIO, Mike Levy says "after you do that, they'll want you to come back call them, give them all that information: is the store clean...and in the middle, of that conversation, they'll ask you to give them the number to the card you just bought.  That's the key."

Once you give that number, they can use the account to buy anything.  When the bank realizes the check you initially deposited was from a fraudulent account, that money is pulled out and you're left nearly one thousand dollars in the hole.

Ocean City Police were alerted of this scam when a Virginia couple received the letter and check in the mail with an Ocean City address.  There haven't been any cases found in the area, but if you think this has happened to you, contact the Ocean City Police Department at (410) 289-8931.
