Delaware Restoring Dunes Damaged By Superstorm Sandy

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del. - State officials have started an emergency project to restore dunes at Lewes Beach that were damaged during Superstorm Sandy.

The project, approved under an emergency permit through the Army Corps of Engineers, started Tuesday. About 7,000 cubic yards of sand are being trucked in to restore the dunes.

The News Journal of Wilmington reports that the project's second phase will bring 18,000 to 20,000 cubic yards of sand to rebuild the depleted beach.

Officials say in some areas, as much as eight to 10 feet of dunes were cut away during the storm.

The project is expected to cost about $375,000.
