FEMA Speaks After Individual Assistance Denied To MD

Posted: Updated:

SOMERSET CO., Md. - After finding out Maryland was denied Individual Assistance for Superstorm Sandy, WMDT spoke to a FEMA representative.

"Whatever they submitted did not meet the burden of showing that the state and local governments had expended all available resources for them to get back on their feet from individual assistance," said Mike Wade, a FEMA spokesperson.

That Individual Assistance would have helped residents in some of the hardest hit areas repair their homes from damages sustained from Superstorm Sandy.

Wade does commend one community for coming together to help the town rebuild after the storm, saying "you know a lot of the attention has been toward Crisfield, they're doing a great job down there helping themselves recover which is something a community needs to do and has to do no matter what assistance comes to them."

According to FEMA,  this isn't necessarily the end for Individual Assistance in Maryland.  Governor O'Malley can amend his proposal with new information on damages in the area.  Senators Barbara Mikulski and Ben Cardin are fighting to reverse the Presidents decision.
