With Fiscal Cliff Looming, Protestors Rally Against Rep. Harris

SALISBURY, Md. - Fiscal cliff protests are making their way to the Eastern Shore and Rep. Andy Harris is at the center of it all.

"Andy Harris has never done a vote for the Eastern Shore," said Carl Widell, regional leader for Organizing For America Eastern Shore.  "He's never done a vote for the Chesapeake Bay. He's never done a vote for the middle class. He doesn't live here, he doesn't understand us [and] he doesn't really represent us very well."

Constituents behind President Obama's fiscal plan rallied outside the Congressman's office in Salisbury, voicing their displeasures over Harris' refusal to raise taxes on the top one percent.

Come January 1st, if there is no compromise.

"I'm a consumer that's not going to be spending as much as the economy needs at this time to keep the recovery going," said Eugene Peterson of Laurel, Md.

We reached out to Harris who responded with this statement:

"With families still hurting from this struggling economy, the last thing we should do is raise taxes which would stifle job creation. If we cut wasteful spending and implement pro-economic growth policies, we will be able to balance the budget and reinvigorate our stalled economy."

But protestors and local officials refuse to take that for an answer.

"It's going to have a profound effect on what happens to us down here on Main Street, America," said Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton talking to protestors.  "That's why you're on Main St. in Salisbury today because that's what the effect is going to be.  We need our leaders to work together, Democrat and Republican."
