Sussex County Airport Completes First Phase Of Project

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del . - The Sussex County Airport is wrapping up their runway construction project for the winter, and it looks like they're ahead of schedule.

The airport received a grant for more than $3 million to go towards a 500 foot runway expansion project, and to fund other small projects such as storm water cleanup. Officials say the runway project is split up into two phases, and the first one just finished up Friday.

"The taxiway, the obstruction removal and the storm water management part are done, and we're going to close down for the winter. This will be the last week of work this week and then we'll come back in the spring when the weather is better and do the actual runway extension," said James Hickin, Airport Manager.

Officials say the entire project should be completed by this summer. They say they hope this will attract larger aircrafts and bring more business to the area.
