Del. Charities Say Donations Are Down This Year

Posted: Updated:

WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Representatives of several Delaware charities say donations are down as they enter their busiest time of the year because donors are still worried about the economy.

The Rev. Tom Laymon is executive director of the Sunday Breakfast Mission in Wilmington. He tells The New Journal of Wilmington (http://tinyurl.com/chqtzwn) that cash donations were down about 30 percent in October compared to last year. That's a difference of about $100,000.

Maj. John Fox, who coordinates the Salvation Army's Red Kettle fundraising campaign, says giving seems down a little so far this year. But he says it's too early to tell whether the trend will continue throughout the campaign, which runs through Christmas Eve.

John Gardner is interim executive director for AIDS Delaware, says he's also seen fundraising events fall short this year.
