BALTIMORE (AP) - An 8-foot-tall bronze statue of Baltimore's first black mayor will be placed at the Inner Harbor.

Public Art Commission voted 6-0 on Wednesdays to allow a parcel near the Maryland Science Center to be the permanent setting for a statue of the late Clarence H. Du Burns.

The statue has already been fabricated. It will be placed just off the Inner Harbor promenade.

Burns rose through the ranks of city government and was mayor for 11 months in 1987. He took office when Mayor William Donald Schaefer was elected governor. Burns was the president of the City Council.

The Baltimore Sun (http://bsun.md/SdfgXj) reports that Sean Burns, a great-nephew of Clarence, has secured $300,000 in public funds to erect the statue and intends to donate it to the city.
