Tips For When Pulled-Over By Police

Posted: Updated:

SALIBURY, Md. - The holidays are right around the corner, and with the biggest shopping day of the season almost upon us, law enforcement will be out in full force making sure everyone is safe, but if you're pulled over?  How do you know if it's a police officer or someone looking to prey on shoppers?

Sgt. Revel of the Maryland State Police says it's a situation police have seen many times before.  One recommendation...turn on the vehicle's 4-way hazards and flip on the interior lights.  According to Sgt. Revel, "troopers are very familiar with that type of action.  When they see 4-way flashers come on or when they see the person clearly not trying to flee but just not stopping, a lot of times a troopers going to know there's some type of problem."

And if you're uncomfortable with where they might be stopping you, officials suggest you calmly drive to a public place or a well lit area.  If you're really worried, dial #77 to be connected directly to the local state police.  Sgt Revel says "generally we can tell the person, 'hey everything's ok,' and a lot of the time we'll stay on the phone with that person."

While talking on your phone without a hands free device is illegal in Maryland and Delaware, according to the sergeant, "If you didn't have the hands free device and you needed to call us because of where you were being stopped or you basically wanted to make sure you were being stopped by a police officer, if they happened to be in an unmarked car or something like that - by all means..we definitely have no problem with that at all."

If the officer approaches your car and you're still skeptical, make sure to keep accurate record of the officer's name, and badge number to double check later.

Criminals impersonating officers may not happen a lot, but it does happen, and Police say you shouldn't hesitate to call if you feel anxious.  We're told a number of seniors and young people already utilize the #77 feature.
