Governor: Federal Actions Cloud Budget Picture

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Bob McDonnell says this year's state budget picture is even more uncertain than usual.

The governor is putting together his proposed amendments to the two-year budget for the General Assembly to consider when the 2013 session convenes in January. He will present his recommendations to legislative money committees on Dec. 17.

But McDonnell told reporters Monday that whatever he tells legislators that day may change substantially because of what's going on in Washington. President Barack Obama and leaders in Congress are in talks to avoid a "fiscal cliff" on Jan. 1, when tax increases and mandatory government spending cuts are set to take effect. Virginia's economic prospects are closely tied to whatever happens.

The governor made the remarks after meeting privately with his economic advisory panel.
