GOOD MORNING DELMARVA - November is National Adoption Month. There are approximately 1,950 foster children in Maryland waiting to be adopted. CASAs (Court Appointed Special Advocates) play a pivotal role in the process.
As trained volunteers whose goal is to ensure each child reaches a safe and permanent home in a timely manner, CASAs gather information from the child, his/her family, teachers, social worker and attorney, and make recommendations to the court based on the child's best interest.
In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, 465 children were adopted out of foster care in Maryland. Sixty-three percent of the 350 children served by CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) programs in Maryland whose cases closed in fiscal year 2011 were adopted.
