November Is National Adoption Month

Posted: Updated:

WMDT 47 NEWS -- November is National Adoption Month, and right now in the state of Maryland there are almost 2,000 foster children waiting to find a permanent home.

That's where That's where Court Appointed Special Advocates come in. Just last year they helped to adopt 63 percent of the 350 children served by CASA.

For Tina Hitchens, it was her work as a CASA volunteer that inspired her to adopt her daughter.

"I really wanted to just adopt but I'm so thankful that I'm also a foster parent and I can help in that way," she tells WMDT.

Tina Hitchens, Bishopville, was named Adoptive Parent Of The Year.

CASA Director Brigitte Saulsbury spoke to us about what it means to be a CASA volunteer.

"What we do is we assign the volunteers to one child. A child that is in foster care or has been abused and neglected. And they advocate for that child as long as that child is in the system and we try and help that child find a permanent safe home as quickly as possible," she says.
