AAA: Number Of Holiday Travelers In Va. Flat

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - More than 1.2 million Virginians are expected to travel this Thanksgiving weekend.

AAA Mid-Atlantic says the number of Virginians expected to travel between next Wednesday and the following Sunday is about the same as last year.

Nationally, AAA forecasts 43.6 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. That's a small increase from 2011.

Despite gas prices that set calendar day records almost every day since August, road trips continue to make up the bulk of Thanksgiving travel. In Virginia, the average price of gasoline stands at $3.25 a gallon, which is four cents less than a year ago.

Air travel is expected to decrease about 3 percent this Thanksgiving holiday. But the group says those traveling by air will find lower airfares.
