Feds To Study Costs At Virginia's Lynnhaven Inlet

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a federal interest determination study of the Lynnhaven Inlet in Virginia Beach as part of an effort to reduce costs associated with maintaining federal navigation channels in Virginia.
 
Officials say the study will determine if annual maintenance costs and damage to structures on the channel can be reduced by using jetties or a combination of coastal structures.
 
The inlet on the Chesapeake Bay requires annual dredging of dangerous shoaling and full maintenance-dredging about every three years. It provides access to the bay and Atlantic Ocean for commercial fishing vessels, charter fishing boats, as well as a wide variety of recreational vessels.
