Portion Of Lower James Re-Opening To Shellfishing

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia public health officials are re-opening a portion of the lower James River to shellfishing.

The re-opening occurs Thursday, although the Lynnhaven River system and some areas of the lower James remain closed. The state Department of Health closed the waterways to shellfish harvesting following Hurricane Sandy because of sewage contamination.

The ban affects oysters and clams but not crabs or finfish.

Maps of the affected areas are posted on the Division of Shellfish Sanitation's home page.
