OC Chamber Of Comm. Delivers Hope To Sandy Victims In Somerset

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md. - It's been two weeks after Superstorm Sandy hit the Eastern Shore, and so many areas are still trying to rebuild - that includes Somerset County.

As residents try to bounce back, the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce is reaching out, collecting relief supplies for those in need.

"The neat thing is that a lot of business members have donated the time. So they've helped drive some of the trucks down there. They have used their own vehicles. We've had some of our members donate their company vehicles to get stuff down there. Also, there's been about six trips to Crisfield, a couple of trips to Deal Island, and then we're just going to continue until really their back up and running," Executive Director Melanie Pursel said.

Tuesday evening, the Chamber is collecting items at the Green Turtle on 116th Street. There's a large box truck set up outside.

"We always knew this was a generous town, but at times like this, is when it really comes out. We were very blessed and very fortunate that we had the minimal damage that we did have. It's been very impressive. It's brought tears to our eyes many times when we have very generous folks coming out. I mean we've had checks for $1000," Pursel said.

Items can be dropped off at the Chamber anytime between 8:30 and 4:30, seven days a week. They are in need of:

  • Cleaning Supplies - Bleach, All Purpose Cleaner, Sponges, Rubber Gloves, Empty Spray Bottles, Buckets, Scrub Brushes etc.
  • Towels
  • Paper Towels & Toilet Tissue
  • Heaters & Blankets
  • New Undergarments
  • Non-Perishable Food
  • Beverages
  • LG Trash Bags
  • Rakes - Shovels - Tools
  • Gift Cards & Monetary Donations Accepted (will be used to purchase needed materials to do repairs)

They will also be accepting donations of furniture, building materials and appliances. Please call Billie Joe Chandler at 443-783-2486 to arrange donations of these items.

For more information, call Lisa Dennis, Events Director of the Ocean City Chamber of Commerce at 443-880-2433.
