Fire In Seaford Destroys Century Old Building

Posted: Updated:

SEAFORD, Del. -- A century old historic landmark in Seaford caught fire Monday night and nearly burned down. The blaze broke out inside Burton Brothers Hardware Store on High Street.

Officials say no one was hurt and that the cause of the fire is under investigation. It took 11 fire departments, 2 and a half hours to put out the fire.

We caught up with the owner of the building, who also happens to be a member of the Seaford Volunteer Fire Department.

He shared his initial reaction with us.

"What's going to happen, what are you going to do, you're going to try and make the best of it. And you've got to go on, I've had great friends and people in the community come around and do a lot more than I expected them to do," said Ron Marvel.

We are told the fire broke out on the second story of the building, where historic artifacts were also stored. One of those items badly damaged in the fire was one of the oldest televisions ever made.

Damages are estimated at $500,000. The cause is still under investigation.

High Street was closed, but has since re-opened around 1:30 PM on Tuesday. The sidewalk and parking spaces in front of the store will stay closed until further notice.
