War Vets, Volunteers Box Care Packages For Soldiers Overseas

SHARPTOWN, Md. - War veterans and volunteers packed boxes and wrote letters for loved ones overseas.

Ralph Smith, a WWII veteran, said it's the least he can do.

"I'm grateful for being here and to help out all I can.  I'll be here until they run out of boxes."

The stories continue: a high school teacher sent a former student a message of hope.

"Jonathan was a very special student of mine," said James Siegel.  "He always wanted to join the military and had a tough time passing the entrance exam for it, but he was eventually successful in doing that."

Jerry McQuown, a member of the Delaware National Guard packed boxes for his fellow soldiers.  Around this time last year, he was the one receiving them.

"You as a service member, you go out, you sign a paper, you swear the oath, you go and serve your country and you don't think about receiving things."

Organizers said volunteers packed 462 boxes for the troops, which is nearly 100 more than in May.
