Delawareans Celebrate Post-Election Ritual

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. (AP) - Winners and losers of Tuesday's elections in Delaware are getting together in a time-honored tradition to bury the hatchet.

The Sussex County seat of Georgetown is again hosting Return Day, a 200-year-old ritual in which election winners and losers come together to hear local election returns read and to literally "bury the hatchet."

The festivities include music, food, and a parade featuring marching bands and horse-drawn carriages.

Organizers say people don't have to worry about high security measures like those seen in 2008 and 2010.

Officials began planning early for this year's event after security was blamed for low turnout in 2010.

Security first became an issue when Joe Biden appeared in 2008 as vice president-elect. Officials thought he might show up again in 2010, but he did not.
