Del. Democrats Sweep "Big Five" Races

Posted: Updated:

DELAWARE - Democrats won big in First State.

Both Governor Jack Markell and Lieutenant Governor Matt Denn easily won their re-election bids.  US Senator Tom Carper will serve a third term after defeating his Republican opponent and Congressman John Carney will hold on to the state's lone US House seat.

For Delaware Democrats it's a celebration, a victory.  As supporters cheered, the incumbents looked to the day after, the day back to work.

"I love to govern, I want to get back to governing,"said Sen. Tom Carper.  "Here in Delaware when the elections are over, they're over and we figure out how to work together.  We have something called Return Day down in Georgetown on Thursday and we need a return day for our country."

"There's still people who aren't working who we want to have jobs and there's still schools that need improving," said Lt. Gov. Matt Denn.  "I'm actually looking forward to driving my kid to school at seven o'clock in the morning and I'll head into the office and get back into work."

But with the victors come the spoils.

For Jeff Cragg, it means a concession phone call to Jack Markell.

"It's a tough day, maybe a tough day for Republicans nationally, but I am very happy to have run this race."

For Kevin Wade, it means a possible exit from politics.

"I don't have a strong interest in political celebrity. I don't believe in professional politicians and I don't believe in professional candidates. So, I have a good life to return to and I'm very happy for that."

For Tom Kovach, no regrets.

"I'll wake up tomorrow morning, I'm still a father I'm still a husband and I'm still the same person and still have people counting on me."

For Sher Valenzuela, it's the next chapter in her book.

"Win or lose, I'm getting involved in making our streets safer.  I'm getting involved in another level of economic development."
