MD Hepatitis C Infection Linked To Medical Tech

Posted: Updated:

BALTIMORE (AP) - Health officials say a Maryland resident's hepatitis C infection is closely related to infections linked to a traveling hospital worker accused of tampering with needles.

The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Monday that molecular testing performed at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention linked the Maryland resident, who was a patient of the Baltimore VA Medical Center.

The department says the patient has survived and is not hospitalized. Officials would release no more information on the patient.

Medical technician David Kwiatkowski has been charged in New Hampshire with tampering with needles and infecting more than 30 people.

The Maryland patient was among the approximately 1,700 patients of four state health-care facilities who had been notified to get tested for hepatitis C.
