Dover, Del. – Be Safe. Be Healthy. Be Active. Be Great!! That is the motivational theme for the 2012 Greater Dover Boys & Girls Clubs 5K Run/Walk scheduled for November 10, at Silver Lake Park. The second annual fitness event brings together community organizations aimed at promoting the health and well being of Delaware children and their families. It will benefit the four Dover area club locations at Simon Circle, Delaware State University, Liberty Court and the Dover Air Force Base.
This year's presenting sponsorship comes from the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) as part of the DMV's continuing efforts to educate teens and young adults on how to become safe drivers and passengers. "Sponsoring this event is a wonderful opportunity for the DMV to show its community support as well as a way to provide valuable safety information and best practices to all those that attend," explained Jennifer Cohan the Director of the DMV.
"Fun and fitness make a great combination," said Dr. Karyl Rattay, Division of Public Health Director. "Good for the Greater Dover Boys & Girls Clubs for encouraging physical activities for families."
"This fun, family-centered event will benefit local children by supporting programs which provide them with ongoing opportunities for positive, healthy activities in a safe environment," said Vivian Rapposelli, Secretary of the Delaware Department of Services for Children, Youth and Their Families. "Every child deserves the chance to achieve their full potential and we're extremely pleased to be a Key Sponsor and partner in the Greater Dover Boys & Girls Club's effort to reach that goal."
The event will take place at Silver Lake Park in Dover and will begin with a free kid's 1K "fun-run" at 9:00 am and be followed by the 5K at 9:30 am. The City of Dover is a great supporter of the event. "We encourage and support the activities of the Greater Dover Boys & Girls Club and are thrilled that they are having the event in our beautiful Silver Lake Park," said Dover Mayor Carleton Carey.
A 2012 Crosstown 4.0 Comfort Road Bike, valued at $400, will be awarded to one of the run/walk participants. All runners will receive an event T-Shirt and food and beverages will be provided. Sponsors will also have booths set up and will provide information and giveaways.
