SALISBURY, Md. - Caroline Smith Dudley, 95, of Salisbury, passed away on Friday, October
26th, 2012 at Coastal Hospice At The Lake. She was the daughter of the
late John William Smith and Annette Whitmore Smith.
She grew up on the Smith family farm in Carroll County. She graduated
from Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in 1938, majoring
in music and English. During the summertime of her college years she
waited tables at The Majestic Hotel in Ocean City, Maryland.
Following her college graduation, she taught music and French for
several years before becoming a stay-at-home mother to her three
children. She led the Cherub (children's) choir at Aldersgate Methodist
Church in Wilmington, Delaware and was a "Den Mother" for the Boy
Scouts of America.
Throughout her life she was known for her vivacious character, verve,
sense of humor and interest in others. Caroline loved singing and
dancing, and was the pianist for Sunday services and special events at
Homewood at Plum Creek in Hanover, PA where she lived for 20 years.
Other than music, her favorite past times were playing bridge, swimming
and, above all, caring for her children, grandchildren and husband of
over 66 years, Allen R. Dudley.
She is survived by a son, John A. Dudley and his wife, Diane of St.
Petersburg, FL; a daughter, Janet Dudley-Eshbach and her husband, Joe of
Salisbury; 6 grandchildren, Jack Dudley and his wife, Eve, Ed Dudley
and his wife, Eileen and their son, Finian, Bill Dudley, Caroline Lucas
and her husband, Billy, Joe Eshbach, Caroline Cathell and her husband,
Brian; and a daughter in law, Karen Dudley.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, James S. Dudley.
A private family celebration of life service will be held at a later date.
