Sussex County Prepares For Sandy

Posted: Updated:

LEWES, Del. - Irene may not have panned out to be the massive storm many expected, but with the direction Sandy seems to be taking, officials in Delaware are worried this could be the one.

Joe Thomas of the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center told us "it's been several years since we've had a storm of this magnitude affect us like this one's projected to."

With Lewes Delaware likely to be one of the areas hit hardest by Sandy, the Sussex County EOC is gearing up to weather what some are calling the "Perfect Storm."

But just days before Sandy is set to touch down, the blue skies and beautiful weather in downtown Lewes don't have business owners too afraid.

"We never close," said Deanna Wagamon, who owns Deanna's a boutique in downtown Lewes, "we don't close for anything.  We didn't even close last year."

Though some are more cautious than others.

Abraxas Hudson, owner of Abraxas Fine Art also in Lewes said "there's always a risk when shutting down your business, but if the weather's bad, there won't be many people downtown anyway, better be safe than sorry."

Experts say there are  couple of major areas of concern with this storm.  With high winds being projected and higher than normal tides due to the full moon, residents and businesses could be seeing significant flood and wind damage.

"If anyone lives in an area that's prone to flooding and you've experienced something like that in the past, you very much need to heed the warning on this one," said Thomas.

In a press call earlier today, Governor Markell reassured residents that Delaware has not yet issued a state of emergency, but they will be updating information on possible evacuations, road closures, and other emergency measures on the state's web site.
