VA Launches Substance Abuse Prevention Initiative

Posted: Updated:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell is launching a new initiative aimed at substance abuse prevention.

The governor's office on Friday announced the Substance Abuse Awareness Vital for Virginia Youth initiative. It is designed to bring awareness to parents, educators, students and youth advocates about the dangers of substance abuse. The initiative specifically focuses on the use of synthetic marijuana, hallucinogenic bath salts and misused prescription medicines.

McDonnell says the program is designed to provide information, encourage conversation and engage communities.

State officials are collaborating with dozens of public and private organizations to host two fall expos in Manassas and Midlothian. Spring expos will be held in Hampton Roads and southwestern Virginia.
