September 2012 Winner

Mrs. Adrienne Donaway

Georgetown Elementary School

Georgetown, DE

Nomination: "My son is part of the SPEAK program (autism program) at Georgetown Elementary. The last marking term of last year my son had Ms. Donaway and the two of them just seemed to connect. Cole just adores Ms. Donaway. She was able to get him to try new foods which is a major issue for him. He came home excited to show me the work he had completed in class and the new things he had learned. He was very sad when school ended and she was not going to be his teacher for summer school. Cole had some issues at daycare in between school ending and summer school beginning. Even though school was out Ms. Donaway replied to my email right away and offered some suggestions. When I emailed her again about another issue she offered to visit Cole at daycare on her own time and with the daycare's consent she went to see and to talk to his teachers there about how to help him. Cole was thrilled to see her and the teachers were happy to receive some helpful tips on how to help him. As a teacher I know a lot of us give up our own time and money for our students but I believe Ms. Donaway went above and beyond in order to help my son and think that to us she has been a valuable part of Cole's experience in the SPEAK program. I think she has that something special that just clicked with Cole and helped him want to succeed. As a teacher myself I also know that teachers don't always get the recognition they deserve and hope that you will help me recognize Ms. Donaway because she most definitely made a difference in our son's life. Thanks so much Laura Miller."
