UPDATE: Eric Bodenweiser Out On Bail

Posted: Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. - A week ago, Eric Bodenweiser was the Republican candidate for the 19th Senate State District.

Now, he's out on bail and we're told he sits inside his home in Georgetown forced by the Department of Justice to wear a 24-hour GPS tracker.  The Georgetown politician faces 113 counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and contact with a minor.

A local businessman, Bodenweiser helped run Bodie's Dairy Markets, a family business of six convenience stores and laundromats, which the family sold in 2001.  In 2010, he ran for the 19th State Senate seat for the first time, which he lost by 120 votes.  He ran again this year, but announced his withdrawal on Oct. 17th.

The Sussex County GOP quickly moved to support write-in candidate Brian Pettyjohn, who we spoke to shortly after the announcement.

"Every Republican that I talked to is really encouraged that, 'OK, now we have one candidate, now we have a candidate that isn't very controversial,'" said Pettyjohn on Oct. 17th, in reference to his candidacy and the withdrawal of Bodenweiser.

Little did they know an indictment would soon follow.

WMDT attempted to reach Pettyjohn for his reaction to these turn of events, but he has yet to return our messages.

Just to give you a little perspective on this investigation: Jerry Sandusky, the former Penn State assistant football coach was indicted in November 2011 on 52 counts during a 15-year span involving 10 victims.  Bodenweiser faces 113 counts during a nearly 3-year span involving one victim.

At this time, Delaware State Police tell us the investigation is still open, in case any other victims might come forward.  But we're told, at this time, there seems to be no indication that there is more than one.Since this is still an open investigation, few details in the case are being released by officials at this time.

Delaware State Police began their investigation into Bodenweiser's past at the beginning of October, when the victim came forward and filed a report over the sex abuse allegations.     DSP investigated the report and released the details of their findings to the State Attorney General's Office.

But before an arrest warrant could be finalized, we're told Bodenweiser turned himself in, which led to the Delaware Superior Court indictment.
